Traveling Mercies

We are heading off to Las Vegas today! Marina is sick with a fever and a slightly upset stomach, and I am not feeling so hot either. I hope that going on this trip does not end up being a mistake! Please pray for all of us.

Happy wedding day Eric and Hannah! We love you guys.

Recipes

I have had some requests recently for recipes, so I am going to post them here. Enjoy!

BBQ Sauce (Used at Luke & Kastle's wedding)

1 #10 Can Katsup
1/2 cup Worcestershire Sauce
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
2 Tbsp. garlic powder
2 Tbsp. chili powder
1 Tbsp. onion powder
3 cups brown sugar

This makes 6 pints--I usually make a big batch and can it for future use. Process in a boiling water canner for 20 minutes, and you're good to go!

2 cups katsup
2 tsp. Worcestershire Sauce
2 tsp. red wine vinegar
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/4 cup brown sugar

This is for just one batch!

Alfredo Sauce (Used at Luke & Kastle's wedding)

2 garlic cloves, minced
2 Tbsp. olive oil
2 Tbsp. flour
1 Tbsp. cornstarch
1/4 tsp. garlic salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. basil
1 1/2 cups milk
8 oz cream cheese
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese

Saute garlic in oil. In separate bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, garlic salt, pepper and basil until blended. Stir into oil, cook one minute. Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil, cook for two minutes or until thickened. Add cream cheese and Parmesan, whisk until smooth. Toss with pasta.

Au Gratin Potatoes (Used at Chris & Jessica's wedding)

1 can cream of chicken soup
1 cup sour cream
3/4 melted butter (divided)
3 Tbsp. minced onion
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. curry
32 oz. frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed
1 stack Ritz crackers, crushed

Stir together soup, sour cream 1/2 cup melted butter, onion, salt, and curry until smooth. Add potatoes. Place in 13x9 baking dish and cook at 350 degrees until bubbly (about 30 minutes). Meanwhile, stir crackers together with 1/4 cup melted butter. Sprinkle over potatoes, cook for five more minutes.

At long last--Entryway Pictures!

Megan actually took this picture.
From the dining room, into the entryway.

Beautiful hardwood floor, and trim!
Wreath--that green is our accent color, whenever I get around to accenting things.

It's done! Yay! We love the entryway, and my very talented husband did a fantastic job! Thanks babe!

The Floor

My life is pretty glamorous...Dn. John was gone this evening, at my Uncle's house learning how to make coffins (yes, you read that correctly). I put the kids to bed and decided to take that rare moment of alone time aaaaaannnnnnndddddddd....scrub the kitchen floor. In fact, I hit the bathroom floor and entryway floor also. But we digress.

My mopping talent leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps if I practiced more often...but I really do hate to mop. The result is that every so often, the floor is so hideously dirty that I am required to strap on knee pads, grab a bowl of hot soapy water, and scrub the dang thing on my hands and knees with a scrubby. So, I commenced Operation Kitchen Floor this evening.

I had meandered my way through the bathroom, entryway, and kitchen and was scrubbing in our dining room. Under our stairs, we have a little nook with a table set up for the girls, and where our heater vent is. When the guys came to replace our furnace, they messed with the heater vent, and left a big giant streak of brown sealant across my floor. I was always pretty annoyed by that.

**NOTE: I will now completely embarrass myself and inform you that we had our furnace replaced while I was pregnant with Marina.

So there I am, scrubbing away. I was working on a stain next to the sealant streak when I noticed something odd. The sealant was coming up when I scrubbed! "Hot dog!" I thought, and scrubbed a little harder. The sealant had funny little flecks in it, like.....raspberry seeds? That's right ladies and gentlemen. It was NOT sealant. It was yogurt. Yogurt that had been congealed and stuck to my floor for the better part of two years.

So there I am, all impressed with my mad scrubbing skillz (that's right, I spelled it with a "z"), only to find out that the hideous stain that had been bugging me for so long was actually filth I could've scrubbed up at any given time. Well, this added new vigor to my scrubbing. I took out my supreme irritation on every other little stain I came across. Of course, my zeal was tempered somewhat when I realized that I was, at one point in time, trying to scrub the grain out of the wood.

My floor is now as spotless as I can make it, with the exception of two little crannies under my kitchen cabinets that I just can't reach. You could probably eat off of it if you wanted to. In fact, my children probably will. Maybe this time, they'll lick up their yogurt, instead of leaving it to dry.

Dentist

I went to the dentist today to have two cavities drilled. It actually wasn't that bad...I hate the shot, but they pumped me full of nitrous, so I was doing just fine. I almost look forward to the gas...I think in another life, I might be a complete pot head. Ah well. It's not this life, right?

We are still getting back to life as usual after the madness of the wedding. Of course, we get life as "usual" for about a week, then the girls and I are heading to Nevada and Washington. We'll be gone for a week, starting Sunday morning. I am looking forward to seeing my Grandma and my sister, but sad that I'm leaving Dn. John behind. Also a little apprehensive about traveling by myself with my two loonies (I mean children). At least we have no redeyes, so that will make things better.

I just picked up the upstairs, and it is already a mess again. A day in the life, right?

I scored cheap diapers and pull-ups today, along with free Dr. Pepper and off-brand jell-o. Yay for Walgreens! I don't have to buy pull-ups again for about three months now...set for diapers until the end of February or so. Love it!

Tacos for dinner tonight...mmmm.....just waiting for Dn. John to get home to distract children so I can make my bread into loaves and get dinner rolling!

Recuperating....

Today's word of the day is RECUPERATION. Luke and Kastle's wedding was yesterday, and I was in charge of the food. After cooking all day Saturday and Sunday, we had a truly great feast of food. But I am exhausted! There were a couple snaffus, like there always are. For instance, the rice got burnt. Not once, but twice: once while cooking, and once while reheating. We perfumed the church with the lovely smell of scorched food right during the Dance of Isaiah. Ah well, what can you do? It all did turn out really well, and the new Mr. and Mrs. Sorensen gave me a delightful thank you gift of dinner and a movie.

Today's plan? Take Megan to tumbling and buy diapers. That is about it! I suppose I'll have to make dinner also...more cooking...

I also have a quote of the day: "The will of God will never lead you where the grace of God cannot keep you." I have no idea who said it, but it is my constant thought these days. Life throws curveballs sometimes!

Tired....

I thought long and hard about the fact that I haven't blogged since last Saturday, but the fact of the matter is that my kids are treading on thin ice, and my last brain cell is about to vanish in a puff of smoke.

So instead of trying to think of something witty to say, I'm going to go play Mahjong on Facebook and not think about anything.

Sorry!

Lazy Saturday

Actually, it won't be lazy at all, it just feels that way right now.

My last week has been insane! I got bitten by some massive cleaning/organizing bug, and my house is so clean right now. I don't think it's ever been this nice. It's one of those "You know you're Orthodox" moments....I didn't do Spring cleaning, I did "House blessing" cleaning. Every closet has been emptied and organized. The girls now share a bedroom, and we have a playroom set up. The kitchen cupboards have been cleaned and organized (note to self: we have enough junk food to survive Armageddon. Do not buy more!). The last of the Christmas cards have FINALLY been addressed and mailed. We even gutted the office! It's awesome up here. Breandan commented, "Um, don't take this the wrong way, but I've never seen the floor in your office before!" And (MATTHEW), there were no skeletons found in any of the closets. HA.

Today's plan? Redo the church bulletin board and do the laundry. Dn. John plans on working on the trim in the entry way, although right now he is playing Wii, so I don't know when he plans on doing that. :)

I am being visited by a tiny little girl in pink pajamas, who is playing with the mouse and attempting to delete my entire post. Thanks, Marina. Speaking of Marina, she is advancing in language skills by leaps and bounds! She says a new word almost every day--her latest favorite being "silly." She also nods and shakes her head for yes and no now, but she does it so violently that I'm not sure how she doesn't get a headache. She misses her Papa in South Carolina--yesterday I turned the sink on, and she wanted to come play in the water. (That was their favorite game). When I told her no, she started calling, "Papa! Papa!"

It is too early to be blogging

The up shot of my kids being awake at the butt-crack of dawn is that I will get gobs and gobs of cleaning done today.

This is a result of the girls not yet having learned how to sleep through the other one crying. Both kids were up before Dn. John's alarm (at 5:15). I finally gave in and got up with them at 6. They got to say good-bye to their Dad when he left for work at 6:15, and are happily playing in their playroom right now. It is 7:15, I'm dressed, we've all had breakfast, the beds are made, and both bedrooms have been picked up. Yeehaw.

Today's plans? Waging war on the messes around the house. I intend to get all the Christmas stuff put away, take out a million loads to the trash and the shed, and scrub as much as I can. The fridge and the kitchen floor are in major need of TLC. We thought for awhile that we were going to refinish the kitchen floor, so I decided it was pointless to mop. However, we have since changed our minds, so the floor is repulsive.

Tomorrow, I get to go to my quilting group for the first time in about nine months! I'm so excited. I'm not going to do any actual sewing--I plan on cutting for the whole four hours. I've got a new quilt I'm starting as a wedding gift, and if I can get all the pieces cut out tomorrow, the sewing will fly by. I'm so excited!

Hasta to the Howells

Bye Matthew, Stasia, Luke and Hannah.....we miss you already. See you this summer!

In less depressing news than our best friends leaving, I have rearranged our upstairs. Megan and Marina now share a room, and the girls have a PLAYROOM! Or at least, Play Area. Now that the little nook at the top of the stairs is not taken up with Marina's crib, I moved all the toys there. I have reclaimed our living room from toy-mania, and it looks super cool. Megan is excited, and has been dancing around like a loony for much of the morning. Now that my upstairs looks great, it is time to clean my downstairs, which is a much more daunting prospect. We haven't put our suitcases away yet from our trip, and they are all open and dismembered all over the dining room. Thankfully, I was able to do laundry before we left, so most of the clothes are clean and can just be put away. On top of the suitcases being everywhere, I went grocery shopping yesterday, but declined to put away any groceries but the perishables. Then, I brought some stuff downstairs to take to the shed, and it is sitting in the midst of the chaos. Therefore, I am upstairs blogging, instead of taking care of it. Rock on.

I just realized that all I've had to eat today was M&M's. I guess that's what happens when I can barely open the fridge, but the bag is left (temptingly open, nonetheless) on the counter. Since it is past noon, I am going to go rectify that situation. Unfortunately, that requires going downstairs and facing the madness....

Home again, home again!

I was a bit perturbed to discover that it was warmer in Alaska than in South Carolina virtually the entire time we were gone. Stupid weather. We did see a bull moose on the way home from the airport though, which was cool.

Relatively uneventful flight home. The kids slept well, although Dn. John and I did not. They are still on East Coast time, so after being put to bed at 1:30 am, they were up at 6:45. Ah well, what can you do? Megan and I went to Anchorage, hit a killer 90% off all Christmas stuff sale at Target, in which I got a "Christmas" wreath that actually doesn't look that Christmasy and matches my living room decor for $2. Love it love it love it.

It's back to the grind today...the girls are readjusting to not watching TV all day, eating candy, and having scores of doting relatives to applaud their every move. Dn. John and I are having to ease out of vacation mode also, in that it's time to discipline again. :) Ah well. The kids will adjust. One lasting benefit of vacation (on the practical side, at least) is that the girls adjusted to sharing a room while we were in SC, so we moved Marina's crib into Megan's bedroom to capitalize on this turn of events. They now officially share a room! We danced and made a big deal out of it, so Megan thinks it's great. We'll see if she still has that opinion tonight, or at 4 am when Marina wakes up to do her nightly screaming. Now that the crib is moved into the bedroom, we have a "playroom" area in the nook at the top of the stairs. Megan and I will be rearranging and figuring out the best way to use it tomorrow. After we finish unpacking the suitcases and all that lark. (I was waaaaay too tired today).

Our friend Eric did a killer job on our entryway floor! I am waiting to take pictures on purpose, because I want to give Dn. John a couple days to get the trim and closet doors up. Then we will be DONE!!!!! Hooray! It really does look awesome. After that, I have a new "honey-do" list for my husband, his tools, and newfound carpentry skills.

Well, time to chuck my filthy girls into the bathtub before church. Megan has apple juice in her hair from the airplane (don't ask) and both girls are grimy from rolling around in the airports.

Christ is Baptized!

Shout out to St. B's

We went to St. Barnabas for Liturgy this morning. What a treat! I really love catching up with everyone, and it is humbling--as always--to hear that virtually the entire congregation reads this blog. Thanks for the support and love everyone. We love you all right back.

Kathryn is asleep in the car with the girls. Megan and Marina both fell asleep on the way home from Columbia, and rather than wake them up bringing them in, Kathryn (who also needed a nap) elected to stay in the car and sleep. Fr. Philip is passed out on the couch next to me, Dn. John is stretched out on the other one, and we are all watching football. It's that wonderful "Lazy Sunday" feeling, even though the nature of the beast of Sundays at the Rogers household is never lazy. So we're thankful for this quiet time to rejuvinate.

At church while Uncle Phil was giving the homily, Megan leaned over and whispered to me, "Mama, why is he STILL talking?" I was amused, as was Uncle Phil. Marina later broke through the Royal Doors like a banshee and stood grinning by the alter. I think you could visibly watch my blood pressure shoot up when that happened. Thankfully, her Grandpa is the priest, and thinks that everything she does is adorable, and was not horribly upset and she did that. Also funny was when I took Marina up for Eucharist. After taking Communion, she looked at Papa and did the signs for "Please More." We had a good chuckle about that too.

I am hoping to get copies of the pictures Martha took at church today, since I know she got some great shots. Charles came in his full Marina regalia, so we took a picture of him and Marina (Marine with Marina, get it?). She was grinning to beat the band, so I know I want to see that one.

We have about 48 hours left in SC before our plane takes off for the looooooong flight home. I'm looking forward to the last days with everyone here, before my vacation ends and I actually have to chase my own kids, instead of watching NCIS and playing Mahjong all day. (It's hard to be me).

New Years in Rogersland

A blessed start of 2010 to all of you! We are enjoying a fantastic vacation with the Rogers family. It has been lovely to spend time with everyone, and watch the girls bond with their far-away family members. Megan especially is in love with everyone, and knows what everyone is "good" for. She has spent hours playing pretend with Papa, made brownies with Grammy, gotten dressed up in all kinds of new clothes with Aunt Kathryn and run around and been a loony with Uncle Phil. When I got up this morning (at 11:30....gotta love vacation) Marina was snuggled up on the couch with Aunt Sarah, getting some good loving time in. Dn. John and I have been able to sleep in (although I have more than him...further proof that he is a good guy!). He is playing Wii right now with Fr. Philip....they got Wii Resort and are having a blast. I feel the need to let you all know that I kicked my husband's booty on swordfighting. It was very fun.

We've been shopping all over Augusta. We took the girls with us to "Old Lady" (Old Navy, acording to Megan) and I got to use my Christmas gift card on loads of great new clothes IN A SMALLER SIZE! Heck yeah! Also got a gift card to William-Sonoma....what a great store. I love it there. I am now in posession of some new fancy cookbooks.

We have had no major plans other than spending time together, which makes for a wonderfully relaxing time. We're never in a hurry to do anything. I love it.

Kathryn is going to poach an egg "a la Julia Child" and I need to go witness. Have a happy New Years!
