The baby is due on Friday

Holy crap, the baby is due on Friday.

I need a nap.

38 weeks, 6.5 days and counting

About a week ago, I started putting our 2010 pictures into scrapbook form so I could get them in an album. I did this for two reasons: 1) it needed to get done, and 2) I needed a project to help my days go by until the baby is born. Scrapbooking fit the bill, since it is fun, and also something I can do without moving a whole lot, which is important these days. Of course, I did discover yesterday that I have a hard time accommodating my large belly and the need to reach things on the table. In any case, it's nice to see progress. I'm done through June, and have done our South Carolina pictures from last August. I'm still waiting on my sister to get me wedding pictures so I can do the July photos. Right now, July simply does not exist in our album. I should pick up an actual album while I'm in town tomorrow...

Speaking of tomorrow. I will be 39 weeks. I will officially be able to say things like, "The baby is due on Friday," and it will mean the next Friday. For some reason, this is very exciting to me. The last two weeks have gone by really slowly, which has been a pain. I feel like a ticking time bomb. People keep calling, "just to say hi," which is a load of malarkey. I feel like almost everybody I know is somehow afraid I will have the baby and not tell anyone. Rest assured, when the baby makes an appearance, we will let everybody know. :)

Right now, the only really important thing (in regards to when the baby comes, at least) is that I want to be able to go to Forgiveness Sunday Vespers. I've never missed it in my life, and I don't want to start now. So, I figure I either need to have the baby this weekend, so I am recovered enough to go, or the baby has to wait until after Vespers. I am less impressed with the second option, but it is pretty important to me to make it to the service, so if that's what has to happen, I'll deal.

At the very least, I have to be able to go ask Forgiveness of all the people who have caught the raw end of my very, very short temper lately.

Things I love today

Sweat pants

Our new windows (no black mold in sight!!!)

The fact that my dishes are done

Vitamin Water (always)

Knowing that the gals at Great Clips will cut the kids' bangs this afternoon, do a good job, and the kids will think it's a treat, as opposed to when I do it, and everybody cries (including me). Plus, it will only cost $10 for both of them. So incredibly worth it.

My new dining room trim

The fact that our printer works again!

My beef with Mother Nature

Had 9 billion contractions last night. (Okay, maybe not that many, but it felt like it). Just as I was starting to wonder if maybe, JUST MAYBE, I was actually in labor, they stopped. It was pretty disheartening, since they were actually painful enough that I had to stop what I was doing and breathe through them. I felt like mother nature was just saying, "HA! Look what you have to do soon! Na na na na na na!" It was then that I wanted to start calling mother nature by many names I cannot repeat here.

In any case, I've got 10 days until my due date. Baby could conceivably come at any time, but I feel foolish to expect anything this week.

On the up side, my energy level has been higher these last few days, and I've really enjoyed not feeling like a lump. I've got laundry going right now, and I'm going to go knock out the dishes while Marina is happily occupied watching Dora the Explorer (Megan is at school).

OH MY, speaking of Megan...she is learning to read! It is so incredibly awesome to watch her figure out words on her own. Her eyes light up, and she gets this big grin on her face every time she sounds out a new word. She asks every day to do a reading lesson, and most days wants to do more than one. She's also learning to write all her letters, and is showing more patience and willingness to practice than she ever has before--with anything. She feels a little shy about it, which is funny. She won't even read for her Dad if he's sitting next to her...but she's happy to let him listen if he's in the next room. In any case, she is exceedingly brilliant. :)

Early

Today marks the third day in a row that my kids have been awake before 7 am.

In a word: UGH.

They better start sleeping in when the baby's born, because being awake all night, then up for the day by 7 is so not going to fly.

Nesting

I seem to be nesting, which is fantastic. It's one of the best parts of pregnancy...that insane urge to clean and get stuff ready. I love it.

Yesterday, I woke up rarin' to go at 7 am, and by 9:30 had cleaned the entire house. After Dn. John got done snowblowing (we got 6 inches of snow on Friday), we all went to Anchorage, and knocked out Costco shopping, Target, and Home Depot. After depositing the kids and husband at home, I did the Fred Meyer end. I came home and took a breather, then made banana bread and sausage pizza for dinner.

Today I feel great again, so I've got plans to do the dishes and make more banana bread (the first batch was not awesome--I'm trying a new recipe today, so here's hoping it turns out). We have tons of pizza left over, so I think that will be dinner again tonight. We also have our Sunday evening tradition of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to watch.

I did have some odd encounters yesterday...one was the family in the checkout next to me at Costco who spent $1300 without batting an eye. Holy smokes, it sure made me feel better about my own total... On the crazier scale, the lady at the Target Starbucks who ordered a 20 oz. Americano with FIVE SHOTS definitely takes the cake. I wonder how she was able to function with that much caffeine in her system.

The coolest thing that has happened recently though, is Megan's feat yesterday. She asked me a few days ago to teach her to read, and we've been working on it a little bit every day. Last night, she read her first three words all by herself! It was so cool, and she was grinning like you wouldn't believe. She is so proud of herself!

Dn. John is off tomorrow, so that'll be fun. The girls and I are meeting our friends at Bear Tooth in the afternoon to see Tangled...I'm not sure if Daddy is planning on coming along. It doesn't sound like his thing. :)

Today

Today, I get to go to Anchorage by myself. I get to go to the doctor's office, have lunch with my husband, and grocery shop at Costco and Target ALL ALONE. If it wasn't for the five inches of fresh snow we'd gotten last night, this would be a promising day.

Our new windows are in, and the guys are coming back this morning to finish the trim work. They are so pretty...no black mold, no splintering wood, and they OPEN without straining your arm muscles. I wish it was spring, so I could open them all the time. Frankly, I wish it was spring for a whole host of reasons; the windows are one of them, but there are so many others as well...

I am 38 weeks today! We are really and truly in "any day" mode, although I suspect it will still be awhile before Baby Rogers joins us in the outside world. This is a little depressing, since the doc told me awhile ago to expect the baby early, but I got my hopes up that he was right. Murphy's Law now states that he will be wrong, and I won't have the baby until March. *grumble grumble* It's one of those "so close, but so very, very far" situations. I have an appointment in a couple hours, so we'll see if the baby is making any strides to be born. It's been quiet on the contraction front this week, which is--for the most part--nice, since I am deeply irritated by contractions that do not signal the imminent birth of a child. Braxton-Hicks and I are not friends.

In any case, I should sign off and do something productive, since my kids are evidently incapable of following directions this morning, and yelling at them from the computer desk is producing little, if no, results.

Perils of being a business owner

I just got off the phone with Bank of America, where I was politely informed that I had been using the wrong account number for their automated service, and that the $1000 discrepancy between their records and mine was in their favor.

In a word: BUMMER.

Anybody want to buy some jam? Apparently I have a large bill to pay...

Valentine's Day

I love Josh Rogers.

'Nuff said. :)

All my bags are packed...

I did it. I packed the hospital bag. I made up the cradle. I put the finishing touches on assembling the car seat. I wrote a two page novel to leave with the people who are taking care of Megan and Marina while we're gone...then added half a page of p.s. notes as the day went on and I remembered stuff that I had previously forgotten.

Little baby, you may now be born. I am ready for you.

(I have to admit, I was really hoping my water would break right as I finished writing that. I even sat here for a minute to give it time. What a story that would've been! :)

Friday Update

Dn. John--seems to be no longer sick. Hooray! He has, however, gotten inundated with stuff just as he was trying to leave work (on a Friday no less!) and is stuck working a little late tonight.

Christine--37 weeks pregnant! Officially full term. Having lots of contractions, but according to the doc appointment today, they are doing absolutely nothing except ticking me off. Also is retaining water like nobody's business, having trouble breathing, sleeping, bending over, and generally trying to squeeze into small spaces. Temper is running thin. Still cannot make pie crust, and am irritated about that too. Also on the lookout for girl scout cookies, and have been thwarted at every turn. Where are you, Tagalongs and Samoas???

Megan--has a new "star chart" for tracking good behavior. She gets to put stickers on it when she's good, and when she has filled in three rows, gets to pick out the fun activity of her choice, be it swimming, the bouncy house, lunch at McDonald's playland, etc. It. Is. Awesome. We are on day #2, and she is motivated and happy, and learning (slowly) that whining and sassing do not earn stars. She also reminds me about once an hour about how good she is being. The reminders usually come when Marina is in the midst of doing something not so good. In retrospect, it's actually quite amusing.

Marina--her insanity grows in direct proportion to my depleting energy. I took both kids to a book store today, lost her twice, had to pick up countless books from displays, and got about a million dirty looks from patrons tired of her shouting the names of random shapes at the top of her lungs. I am, to my own disgust, contemplating one of those ridiculous backpacks with a leash on them, meant for unruly toddlers. I have to admit to judging people who use them in public, because I always figured it was a mark of ineffective parenting to have to tie your child up. However, in the interest of keeping Marina alive (her latest escapades involve attempted escapes into the street--and yes, that is plural), I may get one. Further proof that you shouldn't judge, because you will be forced to eat your words.

Boom-shak-a-lakka Razzle-Dazzle--Growing, growing, growing. Is now full term, head down, and very, very strong. There are many moments when I expect to see a fist or knee come bursting out of my belly as he/she kicks and rolls around. We are ready for D-Day (physically speaking...emotionally is a different story). We pulled the swing out of the Howell's Quonset hut, and the kids are thoroughly enjoying rocking their baby dolls in it. All I need to do is pack a hospital bag, which I can only partially do anyway since half the stuff I need to take I use on a daily basis. I figure as long as we remember the camera and a set of spare contact lenses, Dn. John can bring me anything else I need later.

The House--in a state of perpetual disaster. I am learning to live with it, even though I don't like it, since it's probably the new normal anyway.

Prayers--are appreciated. :)

A watched pot never boils

Or goes into labor, apparently. I'm not due for three weeks, but suddenly I feel like time has stopped. This week is going by very slowly. I suppose that's because, as of this Friday, I could safely have a baby at any time. Also because two of my friends have had babies in the last 48 hours. I find myself starting to wonder if every twinge is a contractions. I was, however, politely requested by my rather sick husband to delay labor at least a few days so he is better. I am happy to oblige at this time, mainly because I think he has taken NiQuil again, and is probably too doped up to drive me to the hospital. :)

So, on the docket for this weekend...pack hospital bag. Put the sheets back on the cradle. Write down all the things I want whoever stays with our kids to know. Double check with the people who have offered to stay with the kids and make sure the offer still stands.

I think that's it. Holy cow. We've got diapers, the clothes are clean, the new car seat is washed, reassembled, and ready to go. All neutral colored receiving blankets have been rescued from the girls' baby doll drawer and are clean, folded, and ready for use. Baby has a Chicago Bears onesie, standing by.

Ten bucks says I will now be overdue.

Random Thoughts and Events

Apparently even my kids have an aversion to Monday mornings. It's 8:30 a.m., and the fighting and whining has begun in full force. This should be an interesting day.

My husband fixed the pocket door in the entryway, so that's awesome. He also fixed the baby's cradle and patched a bunch of holes in the wall in the baby's room.

After a season of DVR-ing football and fast-forwarding through commercials, the Superbowl took freaking FOREVER to watch. Also, why can't they get someone who can actually sing the National Anthem, instead of pop-staring their way through, and messing up the words? I should start a petition--instead of a famous "somebody" they should hire a talented veteran or serviceman/woman to sing. I know they're out there, and I would much rather hear them then Christina Aguilera. And while we're on the subject, what the heck was up with the halftime show? What a waste. Sheesh.

The end of the football season has now signaled a mindswitch in our mentality on the home front...in that football is over, and March Madness and Baseball season will soon be upon us. I've been informed that the White Sox pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 17th. The baby "leaped for joy" when informed of this date. Maybe it's a boy. :)

Speaking of the baby, we are at T-minus 25 days and counting. Does this make anybody else nervous, or just me?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand the children are still fighting. Suppose I should go take care of that.

Marina's Night Out

The girls spent the night at my Mom's last night. Megan has done this tons of times, but it was Marina's first sleepover. Everything seemed to be going fine until bedtime. I got a call from my very upset little girl...Marina was sobbing into the phone, "Mommy, come get me, I want to come home!" It about broke my heart, especially since we were in Anchorage, and she was 45 minutes away in Palmer. Knowing that by the time we got there, she would have fallen asleep (since it was almost 9 pm anyway), we decided to let my Mom take care of her. Sure enough, by 9:30 she'd finally fallen asleep, but it didn't change the fact that I was standing in Target about to burst into tears, and completely ready to abandon my shopping cart and go get her.

I think we have established that Marina is not ready for sleepovers, even with Grandma.

It's almost 9 am now, and I'm waiting a little while longer to call and see how they're doing. The kids are usually up by 8, but they were awake so late last night that I don't want to chance waking the whole house up, especially if Marina had a rough night. I will admit to having a hard time waiting.

If the kids are both okay, Dn. John and I are heading back to Anchorage to have lunch together and possibly buy a new TV. We had a great evening last night (aside from the sobbing phone call). We saw Unstoppable at the second run theater, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I really like Denzel Washington. At some point in time this afternoon, we're off to Palmer to get the girlies, but in between all these things, he's going to haul water and I'm going to hit the grocery store. Sometimes it's a little sad how uncreative we are in using our child-free time, but it's the little things in life, right? Going to the store without the kids is really, really nice. So was sleeping in this morning.

Of course, my anxiety level has mounted just a little bit in realizing that I'm going to be gone for a couple days in just a few weeks. Hopefully Marina will do better since she'll be in her own surroundings. It will probably help too that Daddy will be home at night (at least after the baby's born). I'm glad Megan is so independent--she informed me the other day she probably wouldn't miss me while I was gone. At the time, I was a little sad (even though I suspect that she doesn't know what she's talking about), but now I just feel slightly relieved that I don't need to worry about her as much.

Making Daddy's Day

Dn. John got home a little early from work today, and was greeted by two very happy little girls, running around him in circles while doing their own little war chant of, "We love Daddy! We love Daddy!"

I wish you could've seen the grin on his face. :)

Preggo update

I can't talk or read these days. I hope it is simply some bizarre pregnancy side-effect, but I am finding words get muddled and switched in my brain very easily. For instance, instead of saying "Please put your toy in the basket," I get a lot of "Please put your basket in the toy." The worst is reading though, because I am constantly misreading words. I saw the word this morning "prostration" and read "prostitute." That gave me a good double take, I can tell you. In any case, it's weird and I hope it goes away soon. I dislike feeling foolish.

Tomorrow marks my 36th week of pregnancy, which means that it is *technically* safe for the baby to come at any time, although we will hope he/she will wait at least two more weeks. Come Valentines Day though, all bets are off. My OB still thinks that the baby will come early, but it seems like it would be a dumb idea to count on that at all. However, it seems even dumber to not be prepared, so preparing we are. I am hoping to be ready to go by 38 weeks, so then I can just sit back and wait without worrying. Well, worrying about things at home being ready at least. There are plenty of other things to worry about, and I'm sure they will occupy my mind quite frequently.

In the meantime, I intend to keep up on my (relatively feeble) attempts to clean the house. I have not had any nesting instincts at all (unless you can include daily napping in my recliner, which is about the only instinct I have these days). My temper seems to be fairly close to the surface these days, so attempts to keep that under control are also ongoing.

Thoughts on the Liturgy

Let me warn you, before you read this hoping for some deep, meditative and holy insights into Liturgy: there are none. My thoughts on the Liturgy this evening involve almost entirely the madness of my youngest child. She was not still for a single moment. This is impressive, even for her, as I can usually distract her for at least a few minutes with a book or a toy. Not so today. I chalk this up to the two hour nap she took this afternoon, as well as her simply insane nature. She spent a good ten minutes rolling around on the floor in the back of the church, right in front of a visiting priest who I'm sure now thinks that either she--or I--needs an exorcism. I counted down the minutes to the Lord's Prayer, when I felt I could reasonably send her to stand with her Godparents and have a break.

Let me just say, God bless you Hillary. Thanks for the breather. Sorry she was a lunatic.

Once I *ahem* unloaded Marina, I went back to stand with Dn. John and Megan. Megan had apparently been saving up all her random questions for the whole Liturgy for me to get back, and we proceeded to have a very deep conversation. We have many visiting clergy for Kh. Barb's funeral tomorrow, and we proceeded to watch all nine priests take Eucharist. She was pretty concerned that there would not be enough left for the rest of us, but I was able to reassure that particular fear. In any case, we watched the Priests Communing, and she realized they were all drinking three times out of the Chalice. This prompted a discussion of the Trinity, and how we cross ourselves with three fingers. A couple minutes later, she made the connection that babies are dunked three times at Baptism too. It was pretty neat to watch the wheels turn in her head. After this, she turned to me and caught me completely off guard...I was expecting another Liturgical question, but instead I got, "Why do we bury people when they die?" Yeesh.

Oh, and just so you know--Marina just pulled a chair up to the washing machine and proceeded to turn it on. The madness continues...

Home Alone

Marina just got picked up to go play with a friend. This is her very first solo playdate, one where Megan was not invited also, and she wasn't being babysat for some reason or another. Megan is at school, which leaves me with an interesting conundrum: It is 9:00 a.m., and I am home alone. For the next two hours.

What the heck am I going to do with two hours to myself? :) Ah, the possibilities....

I do think it's going to involve some rest. Dn. John and I stayed up until nearly midnight last night, finishing Season 8 of 24. Farewell Jack Bauer, we will miss you. Although the sleep we will get, now that we are no longer concerned with your well-being, is going to be nice. Having said that, I'm pretty sleepy, and I'm sure my husband is too since he was at work already when my alarm went off.

I think my plan of action will be to enjoy the rare silence, and do almost nothing productive. (I say almost nothing because I do have some chickens I have to get in the crock pot soon, unless I want to be up late again waiting for them to finish cooking). There will be plenty of time later to clean and such. Now if I can just find my Kindle, I'll be good to go.
