A watched pot never boils

Or goes into labor, apparently. I'm not due for three weeks, but suddenly I feel like time has stopped. This week is going by very slowly. I suppose that's because, as of this Friday, I could safely have a baby at any time. Also because two of my friends have had babies in the last 48 hours. I find myself starting to wonder if every twinge is a contractions. I was, however, politely requested by my rather sick husband to delay labor at least a few days so he is better. I am happy to oblige at this time, mainly because I think he has taken NiQuil again, and is probably too doped up to drive me to the hospital. :)

So, on the docket for this weekend...pack hospital bag. Put the sheets back on the cradle. Write down all the things I want whoever stays with our kids to know. Double check with the people who have offered to stay with the kids and make sure the offer still stands.

I think that's it. Holy cow. We've got diapers, the clothes are clean, the new car seat is washed, reassembled, and ready to go. All neutral colored receiving blankets have been rescued from the girls' baby doll drawer and are clean, folded, and ready for use. Baby has a Chicago Bears onesie, standing by.

Ten bucks says I will now be overdue.

Random Thoughts and Events

Apparently even my kids have an aversion to Monday mornings. It's 8:30 a.m., and the fighting and whining has begun in full force. This should be an interesting day.

My husband fixed the pocket door in the entryway, so that's awesome. He also fixed the baby's cradle and patched a bunch of holes in the wall in the baby's room.

After a season of DVR-ing football and fast-forwarding through commercials, the Superbowl took freaking FOREVER to watch. Also, why can't they get someone who can actually sing the National Anthem, instead of pop-staring their way through, and messing up the words? I should start a petition--instead of a famous "somebody" they should hire a talented veteran or serviceman/woman to sing. I know they're out there, and I would much rather hear them then Christina Aguilera. And while we're on the subject, what the heck was up with the halftime show? What a waste. Sheesh.

The end of the football season has now signaled a mindswitch in our mentality on the home front...in that football is over, and March Madness and Baseball season will soon be upon us. I've been informed that the White Sox pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 17th. The baby "leaped for joy" when informed of this date. Maybe it's a boy. :)

Speaking of the baby, we are at T-minus 25 days and counting. Does this make anybody else nervous, or just me?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand the children are still fighting. Suppose I should go take care of that.

Marina's Night Out

The girls spent the night at my Mom's last night. Megan has done this tons of times, but it was Marina's first sleepover. Everything seemed to be going fine until bedtime. I got a call from my very upset little girl...Marina was sobbing into the phone, "Mommy, come get me, I want to come home!" It about broke my heart, especially since we were in Anchorage, and she was 45 minutes away in Palmer. Knowing that by the time we got there, she would have fallen asleep (since it was almost 9 pm anyway), we decided to let my Mom take care of her. Sure enough, by 9:30 she'd finally fallen asleep, but it didn't change the fact that I was standing in Target about to burst into tears, and completely ready to abandon my shopping cart and go get her.

I think we have established that Marina is not ready for sleepovers, even with Grandma.

It's almost 9 am now, and I'm waiting a little while longer to call and see how they're doing. The kids are usually up by 8, but they were awake so late last night that I don't want to chance waking the whole house up, especially if Marina had a rough night. I will admit to having a hard time waiting.

If the kids are both okay, Dn. John and I are heading back to Anchorage to have lunch together and possibly buy a new TV. We had a great evening last night (aside from the sobbing phone call). We saw Unstoppable at the second run theater, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I really like Denzel Washington. At some point in time this afternoon, we're off to Palmer to get the girlies, but in between all these things, he's going to haul water and I'm going to hit the grocery store. Sometimes it's a little sad how uncreative we are in using our child-free time, but it's the little things in life, right? Going to the store without the kids is really, really nice. So was sleeping in this morning.

Of course, my anxiety level has mounted just a little bit in realizing that I'm going to be gone for a couple days in just a few weeks. Hopefully Marina will do better since she'll be in her own surroundings. It will probably help too that Daddy will be home at night (at least after the baby's born). I'm glad Megan is so independent--she informed me the other day she probably wouldn't miss me while I was gone. At the time, I was a little sad (even though I suspect that she doesn't know what she's talking about), but now I just feel slightly relieved that I don't need to worry about her as much.

Making Daddy's Day

Dn. John got home a little early from work today, and was greeted by two very happy little girls, running around him in circles while doing their own little war chant of, "We love Daddy! We love Daddy!"

I wish you could've seen the grin on his face. :)

Preggo update

I can't talk or read these days. I hope it is simply some bizarre pregnancy side-effect, but I am finding words get muddled and switched in my brain very easily. For instance, instead of saying "Please put your toy in the basket," I get a lot of "Please put your basket in the toy." The worst is reading though, because I am constantly misreading words. I saw the word this morning "prostration" and read "prostitute." That gave me a good double take, I can tell you. In any case, it's weird and I hope it goes away soon. I dislike feeling foolish.

Tomorrow marks my 36th week of pregnancy, which means that it is *technically* safe for the baby to come at any time, although we will hope he/she will wait at least two more weeks. Come Valentines Day though, all bets are off. My OB still thinks that the baby will come early, but it seems like it would be a dumb idea to count on that at all. However, it seems even dumber to not be prepared, so preparing we are. I am hoping to be ready to go by 38 weeks, so then I can just sit back and wait without worrying. Well, worrying about things at home being ready at least. There are plenty of other things to worry about, and I'm sure they will occupy my mind quite frequently.

In the meantime, I intend to keep up on my (relatively feeble) attempts to clean the house. I have not had any nesting instincts at all (unless you can include daily napping in my recliner, which is about the only instinct I have these days). My temper seems to be fairly close to the surface these days, so attempts to keep that under control are also ongoing.

Thoughts on the Liturgy

Let me warn you, before you read this hoping for some deep, meditative and holy insights into Liturgy: there are none. My thoughts on the Liturgy this evening involve almost entirely the madness of my youngest child. She was not still for a single moment. This is impressive, even for her, as I can usually distract her for at least a few minutes with a book or a toy. Not so today. I chalk this up to the two hour nap she took this afternoon, as well as her simply insane nature. She spent a good ten minutes rolling around on the floor in the back of the church, right in front of a visiting priest who I'm sure now thinks that either she--or I--needs an exorcism. I counted down the minutes to the Lord's Prayer, when I felt I could reasonably send her to stand with her Godparents and have a break.

Let me just say, God bless you Hillary. Thanks for the breather. Sorry she was a lunatic.

Once I *ahem* unloaded Marina, I went back to stand with Dn. John and Megan. Megan had apparently been saving up all her random questions for the whole Liturgy for me to get back, and we proceeded to have a very deep conversation. We have many visiting clergy for Kh. Barb's funeral tomorrow, and we proceeded to watch all nine priests take Eucharist. She was pretty concerned that there would not be enough left for the rest of us, but I was able to reassure that particular fear. In any case, we watched the Priests Communing, and she realized they were all drinking three times out of the Chalice. This prompted a discussion of the Trinity, and how we cross ourselves with three fingers. A couple minutes later, she made the connection that babies are dunked three times at Baptism too. It was pretty neat to watch the wheels turn in her head. After this, she turned to me and caught me completely off guard...I was expecting another Liturgical question, but instead I got, "Why do we bury people when they die?" Yeesh.

Oh, and just so you know--Marina just pulled a chair up to the washing machine and proceeded to turn it on. The madness continues...

Home Alone

Marina just got picked up to go play with a friend. This is her very first solo playdate, one where Megan was not invited also, and she wasn't being babysat for some reason or another. Megan is at school, which leaves me with an interesting conundrum: It is 9:00 a.m., and I am home alone. For the next two hours.

What the heck am I going to do with two hours to myself? :) Ah, the possibilities....

I do think it's going to involve some rest. Dn. John and I stayed up until nearly midnight last night, finishing Season 8 of 24. Farewell Jack Bauer, we will miss you. Although the sleep we will get, now that we are no longer concerned with your well-being, is going to be nice. Having said that, I'm pretty sleepy, and I'm sure my husband is too since he was at work already when my alarm went off.

I think my plan of action will be to enjoy the rare silence, and do almost nothing productive. (I say almost nothing because I do have some chickens I have to get in the crock pot soon, unless I want to be up late again waiting for them to finish cooking). There will be plenty of time later to clean and such. Now if I can just find my Kindle, I'll be good to go.
